we've had a chicken mystery going on here! last saturday we left the chicken family out in the garden when we went shopping, and when we came home the babies were locked up in the chicken house and the mothers were gone. we went looking for them but couldn't find a single feather.

the afternoon the next day the neighbours called out that they could see mama brown, so the husband and i went down to meet her and follow her home. she had lost all the feathers on her behind and looked like half a hen, but we were all happy to see her. still no sign of mama black though, and we started to think that we would never see her agian.



on monday i spent some time with the girls in the garden, as we were a bit worried about letting them out again. and mama brown decided to have a flying lesson with the babies. they were all very brave and strong!



i had to leave for work a few days, but on tuesday the husband reported he had found mama black down by the river! she was too nervous to come home though. but on wednesday he managed to trap her with a little help from one of the chicks.

so yesterday the entire family were gathered to celebrate the chicks' first month. we gave them princess cake, but they didn't even taste it. they loved the rice though :) and mama brown loves my cinnamon buns, so she chuckled and looked pleased.  ¶ 3:04 PM
