i just realised this is the last post i'm going to write in umeå! tommy just told me that he had disconnected our modem and handed it back to our land lord... and i had planned to post and email like crazy tonight, as it would be my last connected night... so: i can't write everything about having boxes everywhere in our flat, and how we are "shilly-shallying" (oh! i finally got to use that word! i found it a while ago, and hoped that i would get to use it one day :) about how to get ourselved down to our new home, and how to get our new car from tierp, and how we finally managed to get hold of a truck (a friend of tommy's has a friend who has a brother who has a truck that we can borrow)... so... see you someday. we're leaving umeå tomorrow, but haven't really decided how, yet. maybe i'll take a train to tierp, and drive our new car to our new home... i'll let you know how we did as soon as i get hold of a connected computer :)

bye!!

correction: the truck belonged to the husband of the sister of a friend of tommy's friend.

after breakfast tomorrow everything will be for the last time:

*last day at work (including last morning coffee, lunch and afternoon coffe with my colleagues)

*last walk home from work

*last dinner together with tommy in our home in umeå

*last evening dog walk around ålidhem

*last night in our blue bedroom

*last breakfast in our yellow kitchen

...

i'm actually starting to feel a bit sad about all this... but i think that's just the way i am: i can hate a place, and still miss it when i realise i'm soon going to leave. i don't hate umeå, though. i just don't like living here very much. i actually think i *like* umeå (even though ålidhem is not my favourite part of it), at least in the summer. but i think it's enough to visit it now and then, it's not a place to live.

and by the way: it's my birtday today :) i got my presents early this morning, before i went to bed (saluki towels and a dog "poemish" thing). very sweet! and for breakfast i got cake, and tommy even went up to have it with me, although he didn't have to get up early.

i'm now finnishing off today's work, and will go directly to some friends to have dinner. that means: no dog walk for me until this evening... my husband takes care of that today. so i really hope there's still a snow storm, otherwise i'm a bit sad that i miss out on the walk...

we have a very interesting guest in HUMlab at the moment - truna from QUT in Brisbane - and yesterday she held a seminar titled "affordances of connectivity and communication - a dance thru' cultural texts" you can see the seminar in RealPlayer from HUMlab's webpage).

today we had a workshop -"digital environment design for educators", that was *really* fun. we designed educational computer games, which among other things included PDA's, rotting corpses of pigs, ghosts (both "normal" ones and singaporean ones) and jack the ripper. i'm pretty sure this is the thing i've been looking for: the thing that's going to make me incredibly rich :)

packing down one's home into boxes is quite an emotinal activity. today i started with the kitchen cupboards, packing down coffee cups, mugs, plates etc. that we (hopefully) won't need this last week we're living here, and that brought back many memories of my grandmother (who i inherited much of the stuff from). many of the cups and plates we never use, and the only reason i keep them is that they function as "mementos" of my childhood whenever i'm moving. i don't often look at these things, but everytime i move and have to pack them down (and then unpack them again), they remind me of past times. and i realise i really like packing.

it's less than a week left before we move, and i haven't really started packing yet...

one thing i *have* started doing is worrying about leaving all my friends... we had a farewell party the other day, and friends and colleagues came to farewell us in our present apartment. it was really nice, and it was the first time i really enjoyed being in it... i don't know if it was because it was full of nice people, or because i realised that i wouldn't have to stay there for much longer. maybe a mix between the two. anyway, it was nice getting to invite friends for smörgåstårta ("sandwich cake" :), and say good bye to them (even though i'm seeing many of them at work this week).

i don't think i had really realised that i was actually going to leave them all when we move... i'm *so* glad for moving from umeå, but i'm starting to feel a bit sad for having to leave my friends here...

most of the time i'm *extremely* happy about moving though, i just get some sad moments thinking about friends that we leave behind. but i suppose that's how life is... i've left so many friends, so many times, and i've always survived it so far. and it is quite nice having friends all over the place too, when you want to go for holidays somewhere :)

this is something i got in an email today (this is a swenglish translation from swedish, though):

"while you're sitting at your desk; raise your right foot from the floor and make cirkles clockwise. now, as you're doing this; draw the figure "6" in the air with your right hand. your foot will change directions, and there's nothing you can do about it."

and it's true...

valentine's day

tommy gave me breakfast in bead, which was very nice of him :) bob and galdor also liked the idea of having breakfast in bead, but teo was invisible.

we've been going through some car ads today, but haven't found anything that we really really like yet. phoned my oldest little brother to ask for some advice, but he just said "don't buy a v6"...

this afternoon we're having "dinner" with some friends. probably very expensive, and at a very strange time (16). i didn't know people were so interested in celebrating valentine's day... apparently you'd have to have booked 1,5 weeks in advance if you wanted to eat at a more normal time... hopefully it will be nice, though.

i haven't figured out anything to do for tommy today yet. i left a little heart on his pillow when i went to bead yesterday (he was out having beer with "the guys"), but i don't know if that really counts, as it wasn't really 24 yet when i did it... it had been a lot easier if he were a girl, cause then i could have given him some nice chocolate and rented a romantic film :)

as soon as he has finished shaving we're going to go for a walk in the sunset with bob. i'm *so* happy that the sun is up so long now! i don't like it when the entire days are dark... "spring" is in the air :)

today is friday the 13:th. but so far the biggest accident i've had was at work, spilling coffee on my jeans (knock on wood).

to avoid risking that anything worse happens i'm going to spend tonight on the sofa, with the cats and the dog and a book. the husband is away drinking beer with some friends.

there are *lots* of things to think about when you're moving, i've noticed... for instance: where do we want to move? how will we get all our stuff there (contact a moving company? rent a truck? rent a trailer? borrow a trailer, and in that case: from whom?)? or should we just leave the stuff, and get it later when we have become incredibly rich? and what do we do about the car issue? we will need one, as we're going to live 5 km from the closest grocery store...

the car question is almost solved by now, though. we weren't really sure whether we should use the old smelly mercedes for a while, and buy a newer car eventually, or if we should buy a new car right away, despite the fact that we're not yet incredibly rich. but after having considered a couple of facts (a. the old smelly mercedes isn't really ours. b. it is actually more *stinky* than smelly, which means it wouldn't be very nice using it for buying groceries. c. it's unbelievably uncomfortable. and d. it is put away in a barn in a forest behind lots of stuff about 200 km north from here, which makes it almost impossible to get to it), we started looking at ads. and you can't believe how many cars that are for sale out there! millions, it seems... so now we just have to find a good method for choosing wchich one to get.

"null" is an interesting place... i've come across it before, when i was figuring out how to make "mouseover things" for HUMlab's web page. i couldn't get the images to change without linking them to somewhere, but if i linked to "null" it worked as if there was no link at all... and today samuel taught us that null is a black hole - everything that "is written to that file" (can you say it like that in english, or do i sound like a complete nerd now?) disappears. interesting

linux course

i'm right now attending a course in linux at work... and i'm faaar to stupid for this! i remember computer classes in school were something like this... does that mean i'm very old? anyway: it's interesting, and sometimes fun, but i have a tendency to become a bit upset and angry when i'm not very good at things i try. i guess i'll have to give linux some time before i get to like it... it has many featurs i like, but i also want to understand how everything works right away.

things i'm probably *not* going to miss about umeå:
* square blocks of flats everywhere you look
* constant noise
* so much light everywhere that you can't even see the stars
* concrete walls
* worn out parquet floors
